Flat Feet or High Arches: Should You Be Concerned?

Being told you have flat feet or high arches can sound like a problem, but it’s not always the case.

A lot of people have one or the other and function perfectly well. In fact, many people we see have been told they’re flat-footed or high-arched when that’s not actually accurate.

It’s surprisingly common.

Foot posture can be misunderstood, especially when it’s based on a quick look or something someone has been told years ago. People often find it difficult to tell the difference themselves, and understandably so, as feet can look very different when sitting, standing, or moving.

What matters more than the label is how your foot actually functions.

How it moves, how it handles load, and how your body responds over time are far more important than whether it’s described as “flat” or “high arched”.

Where foot structure becomes more relevant is when pain keeps coming back or injuries don’t seem to settle. That’s usually when we take a closer look at how everything is working together.

Rather than focusing on what your foot looks like in isolation, we assess how it behaves as part of the whole system.

That gives a much clearer direction for treatment.

If you’re dealing with ongoing discomfort and have been told your foot type might be a factor, we can assess it properly at Riverstone Foot & Ankle Care and give you a clear answer.
