Fungal Nail Infections: Could Your Nail Salon Be a Factor?

Fungal nail infections are one of the most common changes we see in toenails.

They usually develop slowly. A bit of discolouration, some thickening, maybe the nail becoming more brittle over time. It’s easy to ignore in the early stages.

What surprises a lot of people is how they start.

Most assume it comes from public showers or gyms, which can happen. But one of the more overlooked contributors is nail salons.

It’s not always the tools

There’s a lot of focus on whether instruments are sterilised properly, and that is important.

But what often gets missed is the role of nail polish and repeated product use.

When polish is applied to multiple clients using the same bottle and brush, there’s potential for cross-contamination. If a nail has even a mild fungal change, it can transfer into the bottle and then onto the next person.

It’s not something most people think about.

Why it’s easy to miss

Fungal infections don’t appear overnight.

You might have a pedicure one week, then notice a small change months later. By that point, it doesn’t feel connected.

That’s why it often goes unnoticed as a possible source.

Signs to look out for

  • Yellow, white, or darker discolouration
  • Thickened nails
  • Nails becoming brittle or uneven
  • Changes that don’t grow out normally

What you can do

You don’t have to avoid nail salons completely.

But it’s worth being mindful.

Choosing salons with good hygiene practices is important, and avoiding polish application over nails that already look unhealthy can reduce risk.

If you regularly get pedicures, giving your nails a break occasionally can also help you spot early changes.

When to get it checked

If you’ve noticed a change in your nails that isn’t improving, it’s worth getting it assessed.

The earlier it’s addressed, the easier it tends to manage.

At Riverstone Foot & Ankle Care, we can assess nail changes properly and guide you on the best way to manage or treat fungal infections.
