NDIS Podiatry: A Practical Guide for Patients and Families

Trying to understand how podiatry fits into an NDIS plan can feel unclear at first.

In simple terms, it’s there to help you stay mobile, comfortable, and independent.

For some people, that means regular nail and skin care. For others, it’s about improving walking, reducing pain, or preventing complications.

Where podiatry fits

It’s usually funded under supports related to daily living or health. The important part is whether foot care or mobility is impacting everyday function.

For both children and adults living with disability, podiatry can also extend beyond general foot care. This can include support with footwear and orthotics.

In some cases, custom footwear or orthotics may be recommended to improve comfort, support walking, or reduce pressure areas. Even standard footwear advice can make a noticeable difference when it’s tailored to the individual.

These types of supports can often be included in NDIS plans when they’re linked to mobility, function, or reducing the risk of complications.

Why consistency matters

One of the biggest benefits is being able to stay on top of things. Regular care prevents issues from building up and helps maintain comfort.

For families and carers

It also takes pressure off. Foot care can become difficult over time, and having support in place makes a big difference.

It also provides reassurance that things are being monitored properly, especially when changes can be gradual and easy to miss.

A quick note on accessing care

You don’t need to be with a registered provider in every case.

If you’re self-managed or plan-managed, you can usually choose who you see. That gives you flexibility in accessing the care that suits you best.

At Riverstone Foot & Ankle Care, we see NDIS participants under self-managed and plan-managed plans.

If you’re navigating NDIS and not sure where podiatry or footwear support fits, we’re always happy to help clarify things and point you in the right direction.
